Case Files #220: Walter Collins — Los Angeles, California. On March 10, 1928, nine-year-old Walter Collins left his home in Lincoln Heights with money for the movies and never came back. Five months later the Los Angeles police produced a boy from DeKalb, Illinois, and announced that Walter had been found. His mother, Christine Collins, said from the first day that the boy was not her son, and for insisting she was right, Captain J. J. Jones had her committed to a psychiatric ward under a Code 12 internment. The boy confessed he was Arthur Hutchens Jr., a twelve-year-old runaway from Iowa who had wanted to reach Hollywood and meet Tom Mix. Christine won a judgment of $10,800 against Jones in 1930. He never paid it. At a ranch in Wineville, Sanford Clark told investigators that Walter had been among the boys killed there. Sarah Louise Northcott pleaded guilty to her part in Walter's death and was sentenced to life. Her son Gordon, convicted of three other murders, was hanged at San Quentin on October 2, 1930, hours after refusing to give Christine the truth he had promised her by telegram. Walter's body was never found, and Christine Collins searched for her son until she died in 1964. In 2008 her story was told in the film Changeling. The truth is in the files.
