Imagine spending your life trying to earn the affection of someone who has already welcomed you home. You would miss the joy of the relationship. Every interaction would become an evaluation. Every failure would feel like a threat. Even your good deeds would become attempts to secure what you feared you might lose. That is not the relationship with God Paul describes in Romans 7:1-6. Through Christ, you have died to the law’s former jurisdiction. You now belong to the risen Jesus. And through the newness of the Spirit, God is producing fruit in your life. So, the question is not simply, “How can I do better?” It is: Am I living from what Christ has done? Am I growing in my relationship with the risen Jesus? Am I depending on the Spirit to produce the fruit God desires? You do not obey to become someone Christ might accept. You obey because, through Christ, you have been brought into a new relationship with God.
