When Abby called because DCF and the police were at her door, I told her to take a deep breath, step back, and talk through the situation. When they show up, you are under no obligation to let them into your home unless they have a search warrant, so ask them to identify themselves and write down the officer’s badge number. Bring your children onto the porch so DCF can see them, but do not speak to DCF or the police, and do not let your children speak to them. Always be courteous, kind, and polite, even when someone is not courteous, kind, and polite to you. I stayed on the phone, spoke with the police officer and DCF worker, asked for their identifying information and supervisors, and arranged for them to return for a scheduled meeting. I immediately requested the records and the allegations, then spoke with the mother, father, and children and gathered the evidence. When DCF returned, we calmly reviewed everything and showed that the allegations were bogus, baseless, and false. Remember these three points: your home is your castle, bring the children onto the porch, and exercise your right to counsel. DCF is seeking facts and evidence, so listen, remember that less is more, and do not talk yourself into a supported decision.
