From Arc of Ages: unearth the untold and reclaim our heritage · 27:34

Show by Arc of Ages

For decades, racist assumptions within the U.S. military restricted Black soldiers from combat roles and opportunities. During World War II, Black servicemen and women challenged those stereotypes while serving in segregated armed forces. Explore the contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen, who flew combat missions over Europe; the 761st Tank Battalion, known as the Black Panthers, which fought through France and Germany; and the 92nd Infantry Division, which battled Axis forces in Italy. Discover how the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion tackled an enormous wartime mail backlog in Europe. Their service challenged generations of discrimination. Only a few years after the war, President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 9981, directing equality of treatment and opportunity in the armed forces. Discover the Black servicemen and women who fought a war abroad while confronting racism within the country they served. They were not fighting to prove they were Americans. They already were. #Blacksoldiers #WorldWarII #AfricanAmericanmilitaryhistory #U.S.militarysegregation #racisminthemilitary #TuskegeeAirmen #761stTankBattalion #BlackPantherstankbattalion #92ndInfantryDivision #6888thCentralPostalDirectoryBattalion #BlackwomeninWWII #HarryTruman #ExecutiveOrder9981 #militarydesegregation Learn more about your ad choices.
