Why Gratitude Feels So Hard When You’re in Survival ModeWhy does gratitude feel so hard when life is overwhelming? In Day 2 of 30 Days of Gratitude, Certified Transformation Life Coach, Rachael Arnold, explains how survival mode affects your ability to feel grateful, why “just be grateful” can make you feel worse, and a simple way to start noticing the good again without forcing it.What is survival mode? Survival mode is when your body and mind stay in a constant state of protection. It often happens after long seasons of stress, caregiving, or carrying too much. In survival mode, your brain focuses on staying safe, scanning for problems and bracing for what could go wrong. Why is gratitude hard in survival mode? Gratitude takes attention, and survival mode uses up most of it. Women in survival mode often struggle with gratitude for three reasons: they’re too exhausted to notice the good, gratitude has turned into a guilt-filled “should,” and looking on the bright side can feel like pretending the pain isn’t real. None of this means you’re ungrateful. It means your nervous system is tired. What are glimmers? Glimmers are small moments that help your body feel safe, even briefly. The warmth of a coffee mug, a favorite song in the car, or sunlight across the kitchen floor. Noticing glimmers is a gentle way to rebuild gratitude when bigger gratitude practices feel out of reach. In this episode, you’ll learn:What survival mode does to your brain and bodyThree reasons gratitude feels hard when you’re overwhelmedThe difference between real gratitude and guilt dressed up as gratitudeWhat glimmers are and how they help you feel safe againA simple daily practice to start coming out of protection modeToday’s practice: Catch one glimmer today. When it happens, pause for three seconds, take a breath, and quietly say, “Thank you.” One glimmer, one breath, one thank you.About the series: All November long, Midlife Transformation is releasing a short episode every day for 30 Days of Gratitude.
