Why does a growing church need more leaders? In this message, Dave Frodsham explores Acts 6:1–6 and the early church’s response to the challenges that came with growth. As the number of believers increased, practical problems emerged. Some widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food, creating tension between different cultural groups within the church. The apostles recognised that these needs had to be addressed, but they also knew they couldn’t allow practical demands to distract them from their primary calling of prayer and preaching God’s Word. Their solution was to appoint seven godly, Spirit-filled and wise people to serve the church. This provides an important biblical picture of servant leadership: people with good character, genuine faith and a willingness to use their gifts to meet the needs of others. Drawing on 1 Timothy 3, Dave also explores the qualities required of those who serve as leaders and deacons, highlighting the importance of integrity, spiritual maturity, humility and being tested and proven in their faith. The message challenges us to recognise that leadership isn’t just the responsibility of a few people at the front. Every Christian has influence and a part to play. Whether it’s caring for others, supporting those in need, teaching, welcoming, serving or helping others grow in faith, we are all called to contribute. A growing church needs more than people filling seats – it needs people willing to serve, lead and make disciples.
