What are Hollows on Mercury? | Mr Universe

Show by Salman

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun — a scorched, cratered world that seems like it should be simple to understand. But the closer we look, the stranger Mercury becomes. From possible water ice hidden inside permanently shadowed polar craters to a surprisingly large core, unusual surface features, and a magnetic field that behaves in unexpected ways, the Solar System’s smallest planet is full of unanswered questions. 🔭Now, the BepiColombo mission, a joint European Space Agency (ESA) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) mission, is arriving at Mercury after an extraordinary eight-year journey through the inner Solar System. It is designed to study Mercury's surface, interior, magnetic field, and extremely thin atmosphere in unprecedented detail. In this episode of Mr. Universe, radio host and journalist Monte Belmonte talks with astrophysicist Dr. Salman Hameed about why Mercury is so difficult to reach, what makes this little planet so puzzling, and how BepiColombo could help scientists explain some of its strangest features.🌎 Why Does This Matter?Mercury may be small, but understanding it could tell us much more than just the story of one unusual planet. Its extreme environment, oversized core, magnetic field, surface chemistry, and mysterious geological features offer clues about how rocky planets form and evolve close to their stars.BepiColombo will investigate some of these mysteries in detail — including Mercury’s polar ice, its unusual surface “hollows,” its dark surface, and its displaced magnetic field. Monte and Salman explore what we already know about Mercury, what remains unexplained, and what scientists hope this ambitious mission will reveal. Also airing on The Fabulous 413 (NPR/NEPM)https://www.npr.org/podcasts/1155727495/the-fabulous-413🔔 Subscribe to Kainaat StudiosJoin Monte & Salman every week on Mr. Universe for bilingual (English + Urdu) conversations where astronomy, biology, and the biggest questions in science come together.💬 Tell us in the comments:If scientists create revolutionary discoveries, should they be freely shared with humanity—or protected through patents?#bepicolombo #mercury #planetmercury #mercuryplanet #mercurymission #esa #jaxa #spaceexploration #spacescience #planetaryscience #planetaryscience #astronomy #astrophysics #astronomynews #spacenews #sciencenews #solarsystem #solarsystemexploration #planets #space #physics #universe #cosmos #nasa #mruniverse #kainaatstudios #scienceeducation #sciencecommunication #urduscience #podcast #sciencepodcast #astronomypodcast #astronomypakistanFor more information about Kainaat Studios:https://www.kainaatstudios.com/Sign up to our mailing list to get unseen content and hear special announcements! https://www.kainaatstudios.com/newsletterFollow us for more:Facebook https://www.facebook.com/kainaatstudiosTwitter https://twitter.com/KainaatStudiosInstagram https://www.instagram.com/kainaatstudios/TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@kainaatstudiosLinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/kainaatSalman Hameed has a PhD in astronomy and is Charles Taylor Chair and Professor of Integrated Science & Humanities at Hampshire College, and a member of the Five College Astronomy Department (FCAD) in Massachusetts, USA.
