ABOUT THE POEM:In the poem titled PARI’S LAND: WHERE JUSTICE MAKES THE JASMINE BLOOM the land of Pari remained fertile and prosperous despite ominous celestial portents and natural disturbances. Its enduring abundance was attributed to the king’s righteous rule and the flourishing presence of the wise. The people believed that righteous governance and the virtue of learned men ensured timely monsoons and the continued blossoming of jasmine.NOTE ON IMAGERY: The blazing, smoke-trailing meteors, the appearance of comets and Venus moving southward represent celestial omens. The budding jasmine evokes the sharp, thorn-like teeth of a wildcat’s cub. In the ancient Tamil worldview, just kingship and the presence of virtuous, learned people were believed to sustain rainfall and agricultural prosperity.PARI’S LAND: WHERE JUSTICE MAKES THE JASMINE BLOOMThe bangled maidens of Pari were fair,While jasmine buds perfumed the woodland air;Though nature raged, the land remained in bloom,And fields flourished, dispelling fear and gloom,For wealth and beauty graced the country there. With smoke-tailed meteors blazing through the night,And comets streaming, Venus southward in flight,The heavens displayed their ominous signs,Yet jasmine bloomed along the forest vines,And nature’s bounty flourished still outright. The sceptre straight, the king dispensed his right,While learned sages made the kingdom bright; Thus timely rains refreshed the fertile plain,And justice blessed the fields with life again,For wisdom and fair rule sustained the land’s delight.PURANANURU - 117POET: KAPILAR
