Texas state Rep. James Talarico is aiming to be the first Democrat to secure a U.S. Senate seat in the state since 1988. His opponent is Republican Ken Paxton, the state attorney general and an ally of Donald Trump. Most opinion polls show Talarico holding a slight advantage. The race has drawn attacks from Trump and conservative organizations, including false claims about Talarico’s stance on gender-affirming care. In the third quarter, Talarico’s campaign raised a record $64 million, including donations from a vast number of small-dollar contributors. Talarico, a former teacher who studied at a Presbyterian seminary, has centered his campaign on economic populism, progressive policies and a Christian message. He opposes Christian nationalism and argues that Jesus’s commandment to love one’s neighbour calls for support for healthcare, public education and marginalised communities. In 2023, the Texas House impeached Paxton over allegations including bribery and abuse of office, but the state Senate acquitted him. In 2024, Paxton reached an agreement in a state securities fraud case requiring him to perform community service, pay restitution and complete legal ethics courses in exchange for prosecutors dropping the charges. https://mansetetkisi.com/en/five-dimensional-chess-inside-james-talaricos-extraordinary-bid-to-break-texas-democrats-losing-streak-31355
