Did Jesus have to die on the cross to save sinners? What if He had: • Drowned while out fishing on the Sea of Galilee • Had an accident in his stepfather's carpenter shop • Stoned by the Pharisees Would such a death have washed away our sins and appeased God's wrath? No. Christ had to die by crucifixion because the death of the cross was accursed by God. The theme of the curse runs throughout Scripture. After Adam's fall, sin brought God's judgment and death upon humanity. Under the Mosaic covenant, obedience brought blessings, while disobedience brought curses. Because we are sinners and cannot perfectly keep God's law, we stand guilty before God, deserving His wrath and condemnation. The Old Testament teaches that anyone hanged upon a tree was accursed of God (Deuteronomy 21:22–23). This represented rejection and exile from God's presence. Crucifixion, therefore, was not simply a painful death; it symbolized bearing God's curse. The wonder of the Gospel is that Jesus willingly took our place. Though completely innocent, He became a curse for us, bearing the judgment, wrath, and condemnation our sins deserved (Galatians 3:13). Through His substitutionary sacrifice, Christ has freed His people from condemnation and brought us home to God. This is the amazing love of our Savior.
