In this episode of DMI Doet, Jan-Willem Wesselink speaks with Nancy Alonistioti of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Maite Sellart of the CIMNE research center, and Jeroen Steenbakkers of Argaleo during the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. The focus is on GeoAI: the combination of artificial intelligence with maps, location data, and digital twins. What can this technology mean for cities that need to prepare for climate change, power outages, and other crises? The three guests demonstrate that GeoAI is already being applied in very concrete ways. In Greece, AI helps detect wildfires more quickly and predict how a fire will spread, allowing emergency services to intervene sooner. In Barcelona, data from residential buildings is being combined to determine where vulnerability to heat and climate change is greatest. And in the Netherlands, GeoAI is being used, for example, to provide insight into the consequences of prolonged power outages and to identify suitable locations for emergency aid centers. But good technology alone is not enough. The discussion therefore also focuses on the transition from a successful pilot to everyday use. How do you ensure that complex models actually reach the policymakers who need to work with them? And how can Europe prevent itself from remaining dependent on technology from outside Europe for critical applications? According to the guests, this requires European models, knowledge sharing, clear business models, and, above all, close collaboration with the end users. Furthermore, AI must remain explainable, and humans must ultimately make the final decision. The most important lesson: don’t first develop an AI solution and then look for a user; instead, start with the people who will actually have to work with it.
