Reimagining AEC
By Sepehr Abrishami
Categories: Education, Courses, Technology
Reimagining AEC is Dr Sepehr Abrishami's independent podcast on how the built environment handles information. Each episode takes one subject from digital construction, from the ISO 19650 series and the common data environment to the golden thread, soft landings and the arrival of artificial intelligence in design and surveying practice, and tells it as a single argument built on the published standards, guidance and evidence. Sepehr is a researcher and former architect who leads the Centre for AI in Construction and teaches building information modelling at master's level. The episodes are written for postgraduate students and practitioners who want the reasoning behind the rules, not a summary of them.

In this episode of Reimagining AEC, his own podcast, Dr Sepehr Abrishami reads the NBS Digital Construction Report 2025 through one sentence from a client board paper, written for teaching, that turns a survey figure into a requirement for every bidder. He sets out who answered the survey and what…
- The Single Construction Regulator: Who Would Answer for a Building, and What Has Been Decided
In this episode of Reimagining AEC, his own podcast, Dr Sepehr Abrishami follows a twenty-storey residential tower in England, invented for the purpose, through the government's proposals for a single construction regulator, the Grenfell Tower Inquiry's first recommendation. He sets out why the…
- The Golden Thread for Higher-Risk Buildings: What Must Be Kept, by Whom, and How
As host of Reimagining AEC, a show that belongs to him rather than to an employer, Dr Sepehr Abrishami charts one fire door through the life of a residential tower invented for the purpose, to explain the golden thread, the information and processes that English law requires for higher-risk…
- Digitising CDM: Carrying Health and Safety Information into the Information Model
Reimagining AEC is Dr Sepehr Abrishami's own podcast on information in the built environment, and here he follows one pane of glass high on an illustrative tall building from a client's first project meeting to the information kept once the building is in use. Along the way he sets out the…
- The Information Management Initiative: From a Board Commitment to Rules for Every Role
Speaking on Reimagining AEC, a podcast he owns and makes himself, Dr Sepehr Abrishami walks a hypothetical engineering consultancy, invented for teaching, through the Information Management Initiative, the industry programme led by nima and the Construction Leadership Council, and sets it beside…
- Government Soft Landings: From Business Case to Aftercare
On Reimagining AEC, his own podcast, Dr Sepehr Abrishami follows a plant room with two cramped boilers, the worked example in the 2019 Government Soft Landings guidance, from the business case through design review to aftercare. He sets the guidance against BS 8536:2022, the code that has replaced…
- Information Management in the Operational Phase: Keeping the Asset Information Model Current under ISO 19650-3
Dr Sepehr Abrishami, host and producer of Reimagining AEC, which no university owns, leads an invented owner of office buildings through a roof inspection, a lightning repair and the purchase of a further building to explain how ISO 19650-3 keeps an asset information model accurate while an asset…
- Delivering Valuable Data: Interoperability, Ownership and the Owner's Long View
On Reimagining AEC, his own podcast, Dr Sepehr Abrishami starts from a reported court case in which a contractor lost access to the design data it needed, and asks what technology must do to keep an owner's information findable, trustworthy and usable for decades. He works through the…
- Open Data, buildingSMART and COBie: Keeping Asset Information Readable for Its Whole Life
In an episode of Reimagining AEC, a podcast with no institutional backing, Dr Sepehr Abrishami tracks a plant room pump of his own invention from its first requirement to its handover record, to show how information about an asset can outlast the software that produced it. Open data in UK policy…
- Information Delivery Planning under ISO 19650-2: From Responsibility Matrices to the Master Plan
Dr Sepehr Abrishami, who makes Reimagining AEC separately from the programme he leads, poses the choice a task team faces when it lists a party wall detail in its plan, between predicting the drawings and naming the information alone, and uses the UK guidance's own door example to show how a…
- Information Protocols under ISO 19650: Carrying Information Duties down Every Tier of Appointment
Dr Sepehr Abrishami builds this episode of Reimagining AEC, his personal podcast, around the UK guidance's own example of a client, a main contractor and a steelwork sub-contractor two tiers below the client, which signs nothing with that client yet must produce information to its requirements…
- Tendering and Appointments under ISO 19650-2: What Makes Information Management Binding
Here on Reimagining AEC, the show he runs apart from any employer, Dr Sepehr Abrishami presents a constructed case of a client that picks a main contractor for the strength of its BIM execution plan, then finds that nothing in the appointment obliges the contractor to follow it. Using the…
- Information Requirements under ISO 19650: From a Policy Sentence to a Contract Deliverable
Writing and presenting Reimagining AEC as personal work, Dr Sepehr Abrishami traces a fictional client from the UK guidance, Organisation X, as it turns a corporate commitment to halve its energy consumption by 2030 into deliverables with a provider, a format and a date. Why requirements start…
- The Information Management Assignment Matrix: Who Does It, Who Answers for It, Who Is Asked and Who Is Told
In his independent podcast Reimagining AEC, Dr Sepehr Abrishami takes the UK template that expands ISO 19650-2 into one hundred and thirty information management tasks and asks how a project settles, for each one, who does it, who answers for it, who is consulted and who is informed. One task, the…
