How can an art residency become a space for survival, resistance and the rebuilding of self? In this intimate documentary, we follow three young women – Fayza Al Afifi, Anna Kovalenko and Asita Ferdous – as they spend a month together at La Maison des Artistes en Exil on France’s west coast. Having fled war, occupation and repression in Palestine, Ukraine and Afghanistan, they turn to art to reclaim agency, voice and imagination - and to shape what comes next. This documentary was first broadcast on KPFA FM to mark International Women’s Day 2026, and was recreated in French for the 2026 Lancieux Podcast Festival.Credits:Voiceovers by Rosie Ellis, Violette Raineri Letoquex, Sabrina Mangold and Jennifer RamseyMusic by Serge Quadrado Music and 5XBeatz via PixabayCover art made using an original painting by Asita FerdousProduced, narrated and mixed by Katy WrightWith special thanks to the three artists, and to Marie-Noëlle et Daniel Noël at La Maison des Artistes en Exil for giving me access and for their tireless work behind the scenes.
