Rebel Takes: Melissa Auf der Maur, 90s Nostalgia & the Lost Art of Being Present What happens when photographs of a time you lived through bring you face to face with a version of yourself you barely recognize? In this Rebel Take, we visit My 90s Rock Photographs, the exhibition by Melissa Auf der Maur at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Auf der Maur, former bassist for Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins, documents a remarkable period in 90s alternative rock through intimate, vivid photographs of life on the road, backstage, and within a music scene that helped define a generation. But this conversation goes well beyond music and nostalgia.Through the lens of analog photography, we explore what we've lost in the shift from film to digital, the fleeting richness of youth, and the ways our relationship to time, memory, and experience has changed. From a Gestalt perspective, we also consider what happens when we slow down enough to actually feel our experiences. What does it mean to be present in our bodies, to make room for the feelings that arise, and to allow ourselves the time and support to process them?Perhaps the richness hasn't disappeared. Perhaps we've just got to work a little harder to access it.In this conversation:- Melissa Auf der Maur's My 90s Rock Photographs and the emotional impact of revisiting the 90s.- Analog versus digital photography: intention, process, and the loss of the moment.- Nostalgia, youth, and the bittersweet experience of looking back.- How we disconnect from our bodies to cope, and what it means to reconnect.- Gestalt therapy, embodied experience, and the importance of support.- Why new experiences help us find richness and meaning in everyday life.- Making an active choice to notice beauty, poignancy, and the moments that make up our lives. The takeaway: Our lives aren't just the big milestones. They're a series of moments. And sometimes we need to slow down, look again, and give ourselves the space to actually experience them.Buy tickets to see the show at the AGO: https://ago.ca/exhibitions/melissa-auf-der-maur-my-90s-rock-photographs#RebelTherapyPodcast #RebelTakes #AGO #MelissaAufderMaur #GestaltTherapy #90sMusic #AnalogPhotography #EmbodiedExperience #BeingPresent #Psychotherapy#RebelTherapy #MelissaAufderMaur #GestaltTherapy #90sMusic #AnalogPhotography #EmbodiedExperience #BeingPresent #Psychotherapy
