This song is my heart. I love singing it. I love hearing my kids sing it. I love the language of faith it puts in the mouths of my children. One could think of this as a children's version of the Apostles' Creed and certain parts will be very similar! This song is the core of the story of salvation: Jesus, the Son of God, fully God and fully man, lived, bled, died, and was raised again. He always keeps his promises. Everything in the world may disappoint, but Jesus never will. I don't know if we can sing that enough! The inspiration for this song is based from 1 Corinthians 15. "Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also."The first verse of the song states "the gospel pure" as simply as Paul writes in this section, while the second verse imagines what the reactions were when Jesus' friends saw him after witnessing what happened on Good Friday. It forces the singer to personalize the narrative and imagine seeing Jesus alive. The third verse is a doxology, which is a verse praising God for his acts of kindness and goodness... for you!At each repeating refrain, the child sings, "He lives to be my friend." This line is taken from one of my favorite Easter hymns, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," and wraps up the idea of the joy of the Resurrection for the believer. He lives, my kind, wise, heav'nly Friend,He lives and loves me to the end;He lives, and while He lives, I'll sing;He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King.It is my prayer you sing it with your children and meditate on this beautiful section of 1 Corinthians 15! ~Cara
