When God Doesn't Come Through For You

Have you ever done everything you knew to do, and watched life get harder anyway? Most of us are not asking for much. We are not asking for a perfect life, just one that goes reasonably well. We pray, we show up, we try to be patient, we try to trust God. So when we keep doing our part and nothing changes, or things actually get worse, it is easy to quietly conclude that God has not done his. This week, Pastor Rob walked us through Exodus 5:1-6:1. Moses and Aaron do exactly what God told them to do. They stand before Pharaoh and say, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Let my people go'" (Exodus 5:1). Pharaoh answers, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice?" (v. 2). Instead of freedom, the people get heavier burdens: the same number of bricks, and no more straw. The people turn on Moses, and Moses turns to God with words that are hard to read: "O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me?" (v. 22). Here's the heart of it: God is working for our good even when his actions do not meet our expectations. If you are in a season where faithfulness has not led to relief, you are not alone, and you are not forgotten. Take some time this week to sit with Exodus 5:22-6:1 and bring your honest questions to God. He can hold them. And if someone comes to mind who is tired of making bricks without straw, consider sending this their way.
