Text by Caroline V. Berg, born in 1832, translated by Ernst W. Olson, b. 1870/ tune: Swedish FolkImprovised and sung by Caralyn Wrobel"Children of the heavenly father/safely in his bosom gather/ nestling bird of star in heaven /such a refuge ne'er was given."I grew up singing this song and it holds with it a lot of nostalgia. The funny thing about memories from my youth is that I remember the song, in this instance, as my child- brain understood it. I remember loving the lilt and sweetness of this melody. I remember having an idea that this song was in "pretty language" and that a beautiful song had to have beautiful ways of speaking. In other words, I knew this was poetic and of a different time. Yet, I knew it was a song we held dear because it was about how God is our Father and we are his children. I learned the words by heart. Those words came with me into adulthood where I can now understand each word and ponder its depth. Its such a gift.I hope your child can enjoy singing verse 1 and committing it to memory! Its a beautiful song for bedtime.
