The Courage of the Five Georgia Martyrs
From Fr. Miguel’s Shrine Homilies · 00:09:58
Show by Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word
"To live is Christ, and to die is gain." In this homily, Fr. Miguel reflects on St. Paul's desire to be with Christ in heavenly glory while recognizing the opportunity we have here on earth to continue living for Him and bringing others to know Him. He shares the remarkable story of the five Georgia Martyrs, Spanish Franciscan missionaries who gave their lives while evangelizing along the coast of present-day Georgia in 1597. Despite threats, persecution, and ultimately death, these missionaries remained faithful to their calling. Fr. Miguel recounts the final sermon of Friar Blas, who courageously preached the truth even to those who would soon take his life. Their witness reminds us that living for Christ is not reserved for extraordinary moments or great sacrifices. It happens every day through our duties, responsibilities, vocations, and willingness to die to ourselves. Whether through the red martyrdom of shedding our blood or the white martyrdom of patiently carrying our daily crosses, we are all called to live for Christ until the end. The goal is not simply to live for Christ on earth, but to remain faithful so that we may be with Him in glory for all eternity.
