You Cannot Love God Without Loving Your Neighbor

From Fr. Miguel’s Shrine Homilies · 00:14:59

Show by Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind... and you shall love your neighbor as yourself." In this homily, Fr. Miguel reflects on the two greatest commandments and explains why love of God and love of neighbor can never be separated. Drawing on a memorable lesson from his former Franciscan superior, Fr. Angelus Shaughnessy, he challenges us to consider whether our love for God is truly reflected in how we treat those who irritate us, hurt us, or are difficult to love. Fr. Miguel reminds us that love is not simply a feeling or an emotion, but an act of the will: choosing to seek the good of another, even when it is difficult. Through the example of Jesus on the Cross and St. Maria Goretti's extraordinary forgiveness of her murderer, we are reminded that God places difficult people in our lives not to diminish our love, but to expand our hearts and teach us to love more deeply. With the help of God's grace, we can grow beyond our limitations and learn to love as Christ loves us. The world is not starving from a lack of money. It is starving from a want of love.
